Built in 1868 and deconsecrated long ago, a heritage-listed church in Kent Street, Sydneyhas seen a lot in its time. But nothing quite like this.
Opening July 8, Unholy Playhouse is the latest vision from Heaps Gay founder Kat Dopper — and it’s part nightclub, part gallery, part community sanctuary, and entirely, gloriously queer.
The space will shift constantly: live music, cabaret, comedy, immersive club nights, karaoke backed by a gospel choir (yes, really), and the weekly irreverent brunch ritual Sunday Mess. Over 140 artists, musicians and performers are involved, alongside beloved collectives like Heaps Gay, Stereogamous and Two Queers Walk Into A Bar.
Local artists are also transforming the interior, with all works sold at residency’s end — proceeds going directly to LGBTQIA+ youth charity Twenty10.
Even the drinks give back. House gin cocktail Unholy Water sees $1 from every sale fund an artist grants program.
At a time when queer spaces are harder to hold onto, Unholy Playhouse feels like an act of defiance dressed in its finest drag.
The doors open July 8. Dress for sin. Click here for details.
