A new anti-LGBT law was passed by the Russian Parliament in December banning ‘propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations’. The new law expands upon the existing ‘gay propaganda’ bill that was enacted 10 years ago that banned so-called ‘promotion’ of homosexuality to children. The new law bans any positive depictions of same-sex relationships in mass media or advertising; Advertising, books and films with positive presentations of LGBT people will be banned and online discussions online about LGBT topics can be blocked. Goods with LGBT slogans or symbols will also be prohibited. Anyone caught could be fined up to 400,000 roubles (A$8064).
