The prime minister of Malta, Robert Abela (pictured), has announced that the country will offer free gender-affirming surgery for trans people. Abela told audiences at a Pride event in September that free gender-affirming surgery “will be placed on the national health service, which means that the state will finance the procedure”. Malta has held the top spot on the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association’s (IGLA-Europe) ranking of LGBTQ+ rights in Europe for six years in a row. The tiny island country will host EuroPride in September 2023.
