Pope Francis became the first pope to declare that homosexuality is not a crime, in January, ahead of a trip to Africa where such laws are common. He made the comments in an interview with the Associated Press and quoted statistics about the number of countries where homosexuality is criminalised (it’s 67 and 11 impose the death penalty). The pope quoted the Catechism of the Catholic Church in saying gay people must be welcomed and respected, and should not be marginalised or discriminated against. He called upon bishops to undergo a process of change to recognise the dignity of everyone.
