Gay love takes different forms and in this case it’s in the shape of a couple of adorable young men on a rooftop in the working class Irish town of Ennis, who are deeply drawn to each other but might not be able to express it.
Why on a rooftop? Well, because they’ve just robbed both a petrol station and Casey’s mum’s, where they found a huge stash of coke in the cistern.
It was 18-year-old Casey’s idea (played by Joshua James), who sports a black eye and tatty, undersized clothing. He’s relocated to Ennis from London with his mum and abusive step-dad, who harks from the Irish town.
24-year-old Mikey (played by Robert Kjellgren) is the cooler of the pair. He’s ‘out’, he’s lippy and the only one drinking and taking cocaine; but he’s rough around the edges while Casey is heartbreakingly sweet and stuck in a cycle of abuse.
Over the course of the 90-minute play, which is set entirely on the rooftop, we learn all about their lives and their struggles, and yes, wait_and_wait to find out if they are able to say that they love each other. With the police hovering on the street below, Mikey wants to take Casey to a party and show him off once they can come down, but will they get the chance?
It’s a beautiful and relatable story and one that’s presented with a natural ease by the two actors, with lots of laughs to keep it fun.
