A story of life, death and what might come next, Ride the Cyclone follows six young choir members. After being tragically killed in a freak rollercoaster accident, the teens engage in a singing battle to the life. With a cast of 6 lovable choir kids, an ominous fortune-telling machine and a bass-playing rat, this show is a ride you don’t want to miss!
Director and Youth Cabaret Co-Owner Florian Donnell is thrilled to showcase the talents of the young people involved, while also recognising the tumultuous times they have lived through.
“Ride the Cyclone explores themes that the actors have experienced firsthand. Having faced death at our front door with COVID at such a young age, questions about the purpose of life and the existence of an afterlife have become very poignant in their minds. Each of the amazing cast members brings this real-life experience to their characters, a maturity far beyond what we as older adults could have comprehended at their age,” Florian said.
The musical was selected by Producer and Youth Cabaret Co-Owner, Krys Pendrich, aged 17.
“I’ve been in love with this show since I first discovered it in 2023. It speaks to me on a visceral level as someone who, thanks to a lot of struggles in life, tends to forget to appreciate just being alive,” Krys said.
“I can relate closely to the characters’ struggles, both as a neurodivergent person and a teenager going through a lot of changes. This show made me feel seen and feel I wasn’t alone in the never-ending dread that seemed to come with the lockdown and just life in general.
“I’m so thrilled to produce and experience this rollercoaster of a show with a group of people who are just as excited as I am.”
“Please join in the experience and support Youth Cabaret as they shine in their first musical theatre production. I’m certain their passion for the characters and story of Ride the Cyclone will move you, too,” said Florian.
Tickets are on sale now. There will be evening performances on 8, 16 and 17 October, plus a matinee on 12 October at Smith’s Alternative in Canberra. All profits from ticket sales will go to the young people involved in the production.
