While Oxford Street has recently lost two gay bars/nightclubs (Arq & Stonewall) and two shops (Bookshop Darlinghurst and Aussie Boys), the silver lining is that nightlife promoter, Peter Shopovski of House of Mince fame, has been appointed Programming Director of the Colombian Hotel at the corner of Oxford and Crown Streets and promises to inject the queerness back into the heart of the strip.

The new era will launch on Easter Sunday as the House of Mince takeover all three of The Colombian’s floors from 5pm to 8am. Entry will be free and the line up includes Aaron Manhattan, Alex Diwa, Barney Kato, Harry Court, Harry Gay, Deepa, Madami, Milkpaste, Mimi J, Ruby May Moon, Shoop DJs, Unprotected Success and the House of Mince angels: Cuuntessa, Faggy, Gogo Bumhole and Ruby Teys.

“Sydney has lost several important queer spaces in recent years. With venues like Bearded Tit and Mirage KX now closed, the recent administration of Stonewall, and the loss of long-standing community spaces like The Bookshop Darlinghurst, it is more important than ever that we rebuild places where our community can gather, celebrate and express itself freely,” Shopovski told the Gay Sydney Daily.

“The Colombian is a landmark on Oxford Street. My goal is to honour that history while bringing a clear sense of direction back to the venue.”
