Creator of the trans flag plans to flee the US

The creator of the original trans flag, Monica Helms, has joined a growing cohort of ‘transgender refugees’ who are trying to flee the US due to the rising anti-trans sentiment in the country, caused by inflammatory rhetoric coming out of the White House and its MAGA-aligned media. The couple live in Georgia, a state that has been assessed as ‘high risk’ for transgender people following the nearly three-dozen anti-trans bills that have been introduced there since 2023 (four of which have passed). Helms and her wife, Darlene Wagner, have created a GoFundMe accountt to help facilitate the move. At the time of going to print, they had received 121 donations, totalling S10,656 USD, slightly short of their $12,000 USD target. They plan to move to Costa Rica “to live in a country that is safer than the US is today. We will not abandon our activism in Costa Rica”. Helms created the pink, white and blue trans flag in 1999.
