A 2025 Williams Institute poll has found that over half of Chinese citizens support gay and lesbian rights, including a majority who believe same-sex couples should marry and be able to parent, despite official restrictive laws and negative social attitudes driven partly by traditional values. The study revealed a significant, growing disconnect between the public’s increasing support for the community and government policies and controls. Homosexuality has been legal in China since 1997 but there are few other legal protections.
