We’ve heard too much about the uncertain times our community is experiencing across the world, and it’s clear this might just be the beginning… for a little while longer at least.
Pride and Prejudices: Queer Lives and the Law is a reminder that these are struggles LGBTQIA+ communities have always faced. We continue to face them, with transgender and non-binary folk fighting against erasure across the world.
Dr Keio Yoshida is an international human rights lawyer. They use their personal experience and legal expertise to share queer stories that change law.
Laws are stories of human experience. Keio weaves the different legal cases together to show that queer existence is an example of humanity’s right to self-determination. Take the brave and challenging Rosanna from Sri Lanka, who started the country’s first queer women’s group. Her watershed moment was making international law decide on the criminalisation of women’s sexuality as a legal issue. This ultimately came at a personal challenge for her as she faced more discrimination in Sri Lanka.
I enjoyed how well-researched this book is. There are gems of knowledge on every page. Sometimes the detail can be a little overwhelming; however, there is a lot of knowledge that is useful. Our communities must make it clear to governments and courts how we want to live. We can use this book to help.
